T-Shirts? Capt. Mike wants you to know the whole story...
As you know, first and foremost, we are a sailing company. However, with the global COVID-19 pandemic on-going and our charter sailing operations suspended by the Governor of Illinois and the Mayor of Chicago, we’ve had to switch things up a little. So, we’ve decided to start investigating and offering a few sustainable products that our customers - and sailing enthusiasts, fans of Chicago, Great Lake lovers, those who appreciate the GREAT LIFE, etc. - can purchase as souvenirs. Our first offering will be a time-honored, reliable, standby: the ubiquitous t-shirt.
The problem with the ubiquitous t-shirt is that it has become far too easy to find an online Print-On-Demand shop to produce cheap t-shirts of questionable quality using resources and methods that are inefficient, wasteful, and sometimes toxic. We didn’t want to be a party to that world of just creating more wasteful junk for people to purchase.
Through our research we found a small US based printing shop that uses organic, water-based inks for their screen printing. In addition, we really wanted the t-shirt itself to be sustainably manufactured and we were heartened to find so many choices available! After testing several sample shirts, we’ve decided to go with Royal Apparel’s Hemp based Unisex t-shirts. Hemp is a fast growing resilient crop that doesn’t require as much water as other crops. The fabric is actually 60% Viscose Hemp and 40% combed Ring Spun Organic Cotton with a weight of 4.3 oz/sq yd. I was initially worried that the fabric would feel too thin and sort of cheap. But was I wrong! It is sooo comfortable! And unlike the thick cotton fabric I have worn in the past, this fabric won't have you burning up on a hot summer day. It’s one of my new favorites! All of the fabric for these t-shirts is knit, dyed, cut, and sewn in Royal Apparel’s facilities in the USA. The fabric dying process utilized by Royal Apparel is just another huge plus with low-impact dyes that allow for reduced energy and water utilization.
Obviously, we are proud of the meticulous research and effort that we've put forward to bring you a quality sustainable product. We hope you like the new t-shirt as much as we do!
